2000-2002 Dodge Dana 60 CAD Front Axle Introduction
Dodge Ram 2500 and Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 trucks for the model years of 2000, 2001, and 2002 all use Dana-Spicer Model 60 248 Front Beam Iron (FBI) drive axles. Outwardly, these solid beam axles look very similar to the preceding models; however, relatively few parts were carried over from the 1999 and prior axle. Some of the changes include larger axle shafts, different axle shaft seals, bigger CAD splines, axle mounted ball joints, new tie rod/drag link configuration, different brakes, and redesigned wheel hubs.
During the manufacturing for this generation of axle, further changes were made including new pinion seal designs and a new pinion yoke. Additionally, in mid 2002, the Central Axle Disconnect feature was dropped for most truck models so the gear set, front driveshaft, and transfer case chain will always rotate when the vehicle is in motion. This last change has both positive and negative aspects. On one hand, getting rid of the sometimes temperamental CAD system increases 4x4 reliability but the downside is these late production trucks generally get poorer fuel mileage due to the constant parasitic draw of the entire front drivetrain when the vehicle is in 4x2 mode.
2002 was the last year Dodge used Dana front axles in Ram trucks. American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) axles were used effective with the 2003 model year. (Note: Dana axles were used on all 1957-2002 Dodge civilian based full size 4x4s.)
