Dana 50 Front Axle Introduction
The front drive axles used with 1994 to 2004 Ford Super Duty® 4x4 trucks and on all 1999-2006* 4x4 Ford Excursion Sport Utility Vehicles feature a monobeam front axle design. A conventional, non-locking differential is used on all models. The hypoid gear set is high-mounted with a reverse spiral pinion gear. The wheel hub and hublock design is unique to these vehicles and requires the use of special service procedures and tools to perform most front axle repair procedures.
Ford introduced the 1999 model year F-250 and F-350 4x4 Super Duty® trucks in 1998 using Dana-Spicer Model 50/229 axles for Single Rear Wheel applications (SRW). The Dana 50 was offered with 3.73, 4.10, and 4.30 axle ratios. All 4x4 Excursions and 1999 through 2001 F-250 plus many 1999-2001 F-350 SRW 4x4 trucks use a Dana 50 front drive axle. During 2002, The Dana 50 was phased out for the Dana 60 in F-250 and F-350 SRW trucks, but is was still used through 2005 for the Excursion.
*2005 was the final model year for Excursions sold in the United States. Some Excursions built late in 2005 were exported and sold as 2006 models. Excursion production ceased in September of 2005.
