FAQ1002 Front Axle Binding in Lifted 1989-1992 Dodge W250/W350 Cummins Diesel

Question:

My front axle on my lifted 1989-1992 Dodge W250 or W350 Cummins Diesel is binding up and hitting the front u-joint straps on the axle side. How do I alleviate this?

Answer:

The 1989-1992 Dodge W250 and W350 with a Cummins Diesel uses a small, low-angle Detroit 7260 series u-joint which binds with any suspension lift.

To rectify the binding problem, replace the original slip yoke and pinion yoke with the following 1330 series parts:

QU40701 Slip Yoke
TK40721 U-Joint
QU50138 Boot Clamp
QU40509 Pinion Yoke
QU40735 Strap and Bolt Kit

Also highly recommend you replace:

QU40097 Pinion Seal
QU40022 Pinion Nut
QU40023 Pinion Seal

Note: 1993 and prior Dodge Dana 60 Front Axles use shims instead of a crush sleeve to set pinion bearing preload so no other parts are normally required. Torque new pinion nut to 250-270 lb.-ft. (339-366 Nm)
