Tech Note 1: Matching U-Joints
QU40673U Axle Shaft takes universal joints made to Spicer 1350WJ dimensional specifications. The cup diameter for these u-joints is 1-3/16". The 4 cups are grooved to accept Inside C-Clip Snap Rings. The installed Clips fit against the machined inner faces of the axle shaft yokes. The distance between the inside of the axle shaft yoke ears is 2-3/16". For matching u-joints, see TK40712 and QU90007.
Tech Note 2: Ford F100 and F150
For 1976, Ford introduced the 4x4 F-150 as a higher capacity four wheel drive 1/2 ton that would be exempt from certain emissions regulations. For most Ford 4x4 truck buyers, the F150 trucks quickly became the choice over the F100 leading to the 4x4 option being dropped for the F100 after the 1977 model year. For the 1976 and 1977 years, F100 and F150 4x4 trucks share the same front axle.
Tech Note 3: Ford Bronco
A small axle u-joint version of the Dana 44 was used in Bronco front axles through 1977. For the 1978 and 1979 model years, the Bronco was built on a chassis based on the F150 and it had the same Dana 44 front axle components as were used in the F150 for the same years.
Tech Note 4: Common Causes of Operating Failures
Inner axle shaft operating failures are usually a result of a broken axle u-joint. Good preventative maintenance can usually prevent those type of failures. A good number of axle shafts are also wrecked by poor service procedures during u-joint replacement. Over the years I have seen a lot of axle shafts with bent or broken yokes caused by the slam-bang u-joint removal and installation methods. A QT1065M C-Frame Press with the correct adapters is both the safest and best way to remove or install axle u-joints.
Tech Note 5: Common Causes of Seal Leaks
Axle shaft seal leaks on older vehicles can occur any time an axle shaft is removed and replaced/reinstalled. The most common causes are the inner axle shaft seal lip has become worn and brittle with age and/or crud in the axle tube was pushed into the seal when the axle shaft was installed. The best thing to do is to replace the inner axle shaft seals before reassembling your axle, but you MUST remove the differential to replace the seals. With either new or old seals, always make sure the splines and seal surface on your inner axle shaft is clean and dry before installing the axle shaft.
