Description

QU40657U Used 7/8" Wide Stepped Gear for Dana 30, Dana 44, and GM 10 Bolt Front Axles. QU40657 was the most common type splined hub gear from the the late 1970's to the late 1980s. Outside spline that engages wheel hub is a little under 5/8" wide. These gears are stepped on the outboard side to aid in removal and to space the gear back from the hub cap. QU40657 gears were usually used with QU40050 Spring and QU40035 Spring Plate in the 1970s or QU40654 1-1/4" long Split Steel Steel Spacer in the 1980s and 1990s. Available while supplies last.

Tech Note 1: Splined Hub Gears
QU40598/QU40428U/QU40657U Splined Front Hub Gears for Dana 30, Dana 44, and GM 10 Bolt Front Axles were used on 4x4s without lockout hubs from 1959 to 1993. These one piece, solid steel splined hub gears provide the strongest connection between your axle shaft and wheel hub. At least five different gears of were used on various vehicles over the years. QU40598/QU40428U/QU40657U are the most common variants.

Tech Note 2: Product Note
QU40657 7/8" Wide Single Stepped Gear was used with with three different configurations. Many later production axles with axle shafts having a back edge of a snap ring groove located about 5/8" from the end use QU40657 Gear paired with QU40654 1-1/4" long Split Steel Steel Spacer. When used with QU40050 Spring and QU40035 Spring Plate, the back face of the axle shaft snap ring was usually about 5/16" from the end, however some applications use an inset snap ring (back edge about 5/8" from the end) which spaces the gear farther back in the hub.

Tech Note 3: History
Up until the early 1970s, splined hub gears were the "stock" equipment on most lighter 4x4s. If you wanted lockouts, you paid extra. With the advent of full time transfer cases in 1973, splined hub gears were used instead of lockouts on trucks with internally spined wheel hubs. When the full time transfer case fad died out after 1979, splined hub gears were pretty much dropped as factory equipment until Jeep (1982-1984) and Dodge (1985-1993) introduced Dana 44 front axles with vacuum controlled central axle disconnect. Today, splined hub gears are rare and out of production, but still in high demand for competition and severe off road use as they are by far, the strongest choice available for connecting the axle shaft to the wheel hub.

Tech Note 4: Spring and Plate
The large, inboard end of QU40050 Spring rests against QU40035 Cupped Spring Plate. If the plate is damaged, replace it at the same time you replace the spring. QU40035 cup-shaped plates are often installed backwards which will ruin the plate and outer wheel bearing. Install the plate so the FLAT side is towards the spring!
