Tech Note 1: Please Note
Factory Shop Manuals are excellent sources of information, but they are written by highly skilled tech teams for the professional automotive technician with good reading and comprehension skills. The service procedures often skip over small steps that the pro performs without even thinking about it. The illustrations are usually good, but lack fine detail that would help the first time or Do-It Yourself (DIY) mechanic. As an example, my TM1003 NV4500 Transmission Service Manual has 116 pages and over 400 color photographs plus very detailed rebuild and technical information to cover rebuilding a NV4500 5 Speed Manual Transmission. The Dodge Factory Service Manual coverage includes a few dozen line drawings spread over about 40 pages. On the other hand, the Dodge Factory Manual pages include transmission removal and installation information which my TM1003 does not.
Tech Note 2: 1989-1993 Changes
The 1989-1993 era of Dodge Ram full size truck models was a time of transition. Externally, 89-93 the trucks pretty much look the same as 1972-1988 vehicles, but under the skin a major evolution was taking place with the introduction of fuel injected gasoline engines and the debut of the mighty turbocharged Cummins Diesel engine. By todays standards, the 160 hp Cummins Diesel would seem anemic, but at the time it was introduced, the 400 lb-ft of torque had almost unbelievable power. I think a fair case could be made that the Cummins engine saved the Dodge full size pickup from extinction. By 1988, the Dodge pickup was an underpowered, dated design which was fully two generations behind Ford and GM. Dodge truck sales were only a fraction of Ford and GM totals. Except for fleet buyers, only die-hard Dodge fans were even looking at the Ram truck. That all changed in 1989 with the introduction of the Cummins engine. Suddenly, the old body didn't seem to matter as the word spread about the Cummins powered trucks phenomenal fuel mileage and towing capability.
