Tech Note 3: Design Change
Front output shafts were built in an early and late version. While they are functionally interchangeable if you also replace the sprocket snap ring, I feel the 1999-2004 Front Output Shaft is preferred for competition or really heavy-duty use, due to the full-length spline and the early Sprocket Snap Ring is significantly thicker than the one used with the later shaft. The difference between the two shafts is the spline length, diameter of machined area between the sprocket and front output bearing, and the thickness of the snap ring groove. Early production, QU50672 1st design Shafts have longer splines, a larger diameter machined area, and a wider Snap Ring Groove compared to the later QU10998 2nd design shafts. The changeover between the two interchangeable shaft designs occurred in 2004-2005.
Tech Note 4: New Venture/New Process/Magna
When Ford (1999 models) and Dodge (2003 models) first used NV271 and NV273 transfer cases, New Process Gear (NPG) of East Syracuse N.Y was part of New Venture Gear (NVG). When NVG dissolved, NPG continued on under Chrysler. Chrysler subsequently sold the production rights to Magna, a Canadian automotive parts company. All these name changes are confusing, but the important thing to know is a specific assembly number for any 271F, 271D, 273D, and 273F transfer case is the same and uses the same replacement parts regardless if it was built by New Venture, New Process, or Magna.
