Tech Note 1: Bent Tubing
Driveshafts need to be retubed anytime the tubing gets bent or dented. Driveshaft assembly can be done by any competent machinist, but best results are usually obtained from dedicated driveshaft specialists who can both build and balance the finished shaft. Tech Note 2: Tubing Strength
The strength of driveshaft tubing is dependent upon the material, length, outside diameter, and thickness of the tubing. All driveshaft tubing is high quality, but for a given size, steel is stronger than aluminum or graphite. Most 2-1/2" diameter front Double Cardan CV steel driveshafts used in full size 4x4s are made from medium gauge 0.083" thick tubing, Due to the power of the Cummins engine, Dodge used heavy gauge 0.095" wall thickness tubing for most 1994 and newer front CV shafts.
