Tech Note 1: Specs
QA40507 fits Dana Spicer closed knuckle front axles shafts with an inside span between the yoke ears of 2-3/16". The cup diameter is 1-1/16". There are no seals on the cups as these axle u-joints are designed to be bathed in a semi-liquid Closed Knuckle Lubricant inside the enclosed steering knuckle. If your 4x4 has lockout hubs, you should drive the vehicle with the hubs engaged at least once monthly so the axle shaft will fling lube to the upper knuckle bearing.

Tech Note 2: Lube/Grease Tip
If the vehicle manufacturer recommended steering knuckle lubricant is not available, Dana recommends SAE 140 grade gear lubricant for the knuckles. However, straight gear lube will almost always seep past the knuckle seal which covers the inside of the tires, stains the garage floor and is unacceptable for current environmental standards. What I do, is mix SAE 250 weight gear lube with grease to make a semi-liquid lubricant which will flow into the bearings and u-joints, but not seep significantly past the seals.

Tech Note 3: U-Joint Size
By today's standards, QA40507 u-joints are undersized for Jeep size SUVs and considerably undersized for full size truck models. Since vintage vehicles that used these joints were generally lighter in weight, built with much less powerful engines, and with less transfer case low range gear reduction compared to current models, the joint size is probably at least barely adequate for most stock uses. The QA40507 solid cross gives a little extra strength, but if you are planning on putting a high torque engine and/or an extra low range transfer case in your old 4x4, the chances of having an axle shaft or u-joint break under load will be much higher than a stock vehicle.
