Dan the Gear Man® Tech Notes:
Worn Bearings
Model 70HD
Applications
Tech Note 1: Worn Bearings
Worn out Differential Bearings are the second leading cause of catastrophic Dana 60 and Dana 70 axle failures (lubrication issues is #1.) If your truck has a Diesel or Heavy Duty gas engine, you should replace the Differential Bearings and Cups every 125,000 miles or less in rear axle applications. The Dana 60 and 70 are old designs dating back to the 1950's when the Ford 292 V8 was a big engine. It is still a decent axle, however, the diff bearings are a bit undersized for modern engines. Letting your Bearings go too long will cause the cups to wear sideways into the axle housing and the cones to spin on the diff case. Your pocketbook will not like the results. Rebearing service procedures are covered in my TM4400 Pinion and Differential Bearing Service on Dana-Spicer Monobeam Axles.
Tech Note 2: Model 70HD
This Set DOES NOT FIT any Model 70HD axle or any Model 70 rear axle with 4.25" diameter bearing cups. For these applications see QU40259.
Applications:
Vehicle Applications too numerous to list.
This Bearing and Cup Set is used on the differential of Dana 60, 61, and 70 axles plus many corporate axles and for some wheel bearing applications
