Tech Note 3: NV273 History
When GM first started using the NV273, it was built at the Chrysler owned New Process Gear Plant (NPG) in East Syracuse, New York which was then operated by New Venture Gear (NVG) a joint venture controlled by Chrysler and General Motors. The case castings usually had the New Venture Logo, but the assembly tag had the New Process Name. When NVG dissolved a short time later, Chrysler continued building the GM NV273 at the New Process factory. After a couple of years, Chrysler sold the New Process production rights to Canada's Magna Corporation. Under Magna, NV273 transfer cases were still built at the NPG plant until GM killed off their medium duty truck lines. From 2010 to 2011 Magna phased out the NPG factory and moved legacy transfer case assembly to Indiana. The important thing to know is despite all these name changes and plant relocations, most of the parts in a 2005 GM NV273 built in Syracuse are pretty much the same as a 2014 NV273 replacement assembly from Indiana.
