Applications
Tech Note 1: U-Joints
QU20492U uses solid cross, external snap ring universal joints without seals that are designed to be bathed in lubricant from the closed knuckle balls. By today's standards, the QU40424M u-joints are undersized for 3/4 ton models, but given the lighter vehicle weights and modestly powered engines of the early 1960's to mid 1970's, the joint size was adequate. The solid cross gives it a little extra strength, but these original equipment u-joints are expensive. I do not like to run greaseable u-joints in these axles, but you can use our QU40731 u-joints if you remove the seals and are willing to accept a little loss of strength. Our super strong Torque King® TK40719 cold-forged universal joint CAN NOT be used unless you grind some meat off the axle shaft yokes to gain clearance for installing the cross. Since the axle shafts are not all that strong anyway, grinding is obviously not something most people would want to do.
