Tech Note 1: Brake Size
QU20394U works with either 12-1/8" x 2" or 12" x 2-1/2" Brake Drums.
Tech Note 2: Year Breaks
1969: Midway through the 1969 model year, Ford changed the F250 rear axle spindle size effective with serial number F30000 (some sources list as F70000). The spindle thread size was increased from 1-13/16" to 2". QU20394U fits axles with 2" spindle thread size. and both inner and outer wheel bearings are the same size.
1978: Effective with build date September 18, 1978, Ford started using Bendix hub and drum assemblies on 4x4 models. The hub may look slightly different, but the Kelsey Hayes (1969-1978) and Bendix (1978-1979) hubs are interchangeable.
Tech Note 3: Lubrication
The wheel bearings need to be packed with clean NLGI #2 wheel bearing grease to provide initial lubrication until oil from the differential can flow into the wheel hubs. We recommend Motorcraft Premium Long-Life Grease which meets Ford lubricant specification ESA-M1C75-B.
Tech Note 4: Spindle Lockwasher
Never reuse a spindle lock washer! These parts are designed for a single use. If you reuse one of these, metal fatigue on the spindle notch tab or any previously bent over tabs can cause that tab to break off. A broken tab WILL NOT prevent the spindle nuts from coming off! If you think these washers are expensive, you will not like what it costs to fix your truck after the hub and wheel flies off going down the interstate! See QU20017.
Tech Note 5: Wheel Bearing Adjustment
- Adjust the inner spindle nut with QT1009 or QT1009i Spindle Nut Socket to 50-80 lb-ft. while rotating the hub.
- Back the nut off 1 turn
- Re-torque to 50-80 lb-ft. while rotating the hub.
- Put a thin coat of grease on both sides of a NEW QU20017 Lock Washer.
- Install the washer on the spindle and push it up against the inner spindle washer.
- Tighten the Lock Nut to 90-110 lb-ft. (the 90-110 spec is from official Ford Shop Manuals, however that much torque will usually shear the spindle tab on the lock washer. If you shear off a tab, get a new Lock Washer and try torquing the outer nut to a lower value. Back in the days when I worked on a lot of 1970's vintage Fords, I usually torqued the outer spindle nut to 50-60 lb-ft. while rotating the hub.
- Check the hub spins freely, then check the wheel bearing/hub end-play. The end play measured with a dial indicator indicating off the hub should be 0.001" to 0.010".
- When the correct end-play is achieved. Bend 2 tabs inward over the inner nut and 2 tabs outward over the outer nut.
