QT1032 USA Made Dana 25-Dana 80 Differential Case Spreader for Dana-Spicer Axles Dana Axles are designed to have a differential bearing preload of .010"-.015". With our Case Spreader, removing and installing front and rear differentials on your 4x4 is much easier and will help prevent damage to those expensive differential components. Simply insert the attachment pins into the holes in your differential casting, mount a dial indicator to measure the amount of spread, and turn the adjuster with a wrench to spread your housing up to .020" depending upon model. This Case Spreader will work on Dana 25, Dana 27, Dana 30, Dana 35, Dana 44, Dana 44HD, Dana 50, Dana 60, Dana 61, Dana 70, Dana 70HD, and Dana 80 front or rear beam axles. Also works on 8.8 Ford and GM 10-12 Bolt Differentials. This Spreader was designed before the advent of the Model 80 axle, so when used on the 80, some bar deflection may occur at the maximum spread. Tech Note 1: Necessary?
Is a Case Spreader really necessary? Considering that at least 95% of Dana differentials are removed and installed without a Case Spreader the answer must be no. But, if we change your question to: "Is a Case Spreader really necessary to prevent damage to my parts or myself?" Then the answer is an unqualified yes. Using a Spreader to relieve the differential bearing preload means it will be much easier to get the diff in and out and there is much less chance of injuring yourself or wrecking parts by using the what we call "cowboy" methods. Axles, differentials, and case spreaders are all really heavy if they fall on any portion of your body. Use care and common sense, if you don't know how to safely work on your vehicle, find someone who does!
