The American Axle Manufacturing AA 9-1/4" (235mm) 12 bolt electronic Central Axle Disconnect front axle was first introduced during the 2013 model year for Ram 3500 4x4 trucks. The new axle had a split introduction with the Ram 3500 getting it for 2013 while the Ram 2500 had to wait until 2014 ( but there are some exceptions depending upon the vehicle build date). The new 12 bolt axle is easy to tell apart from the older 14 bolt both by the number of cover bolts and type of suspension. The older, 5,500 pound rated 14 bolt axle has two short trailing arms on each side to connect the back of the axle to the frame. The new 6,000 pound rated 12 bolt axle uses one long radius arm per side between the back of the axle and the frame. For the 2014 to 2018 model years, all Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4s have the 12 bolt electronic CAD axle. With the higher axle rating and CAD design, many of the parts used on the 2013-2018 12 bolt axle are not interchangeable with the previous axle model. In addition to the standard, open differential found in most Ram HD models, an electronic locking differential was supplied as part of the Ram 2500 Power Wagon package.
