Spindle Nuts have two functions and they are to provide for correct wheel bearing adjustment and to keep your rear wheel hubs in place. Ratchet type Spindle Nuts are reusable, but they often need replacement due to weakening of the tension spring or when the nut separates during removal. Given the critical job these nuts do, you should always replace any spindle nut that is not in perfect condition. The nuts from double spindle nut sets are also reusable, but the bend-over tab spindle lock washers are not.
