When installed in a vehicle with the weight on the tires, a Driveshaft should have the slip joint positioned at about the midpoint of it's normal travel. Most full size truck slip joints have a normal travel length of 2.75" to 3". The exact point of the slip joint at rest position will vary depending upon the vehicle loading and condition of the front springs. If a driveshaft is too long, you can damage the driveshaft or even break a transfer case. Too short of a driveshaft can cause increase spline wear or worse, allowing the slip joint to separate as the axle articulates up and down while driving.
