For parts identification purposes, a Round Tag is affixed to the back of the rear case. Stamped on the tag are the Model Number (NV273D or MP273), Assembly Number (8 digit number plus two letters), Transfer Case Build Date, and Low Range Ratio (2.72). In most cases, parts identification is pretty straight forward with the year and assembly number, but there are times we may need additional information such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), engine, transmission, transfer case build date, or truck model. Transfer Cases built in the U.S. have the NPG Logo and the legend New Process Gear Syracuse, New York in red plus wording to identify what each number signifies. Replacement cases built at Magna Powertrains New Venture Legacy Transfer Case plant in Indiana cases typically have the legend Magna Powertrain (top) Muncie IN (bottom) in red plus dot-peened numbers. Magna purchased the New Process Transfer Case production rights from Chrysler in February 2009.
If the first digit of your transfer case assembly number begins with a R instead of a 5, your transfer case is rebuilt replacement unit.
