With a regular driveshaft using a single u-joint at each end, increasing the angle of the driveshaft shaft beyond a few degrees in relation to the transfer case and axle will cause a pulsing vibration that in severe cases can cause catastrophic component failures. The cause of the vibration is the speed of the two u-joints will not be equal as the driveshaft angle increases. A High Angle Constant Velocity Driveshaft uses three universal joints to nearly equalize the speed of the u-joints even at maximum operating angles up to 30 degrees at the CV end. A Double Cardan CV Joint with yokes specially machined to operate at high angles is located at the transfer case of the shaft and a single u-joint is used at the axle.

Other driveshaft specific factors that can cause or contribute to driveshaft vibration including phasing (2° max difference between the yokes), radial runout, and balance can be minimized by attention to detail when fabricating a driveshaft.
