GM used several different steering knuckles in 1973-1981 Dana 44 front axles. The differences are in the length of the spindle studs, how the tie rod mounts (above or below the knuckle steering arm) and whether or not there is a tapped hole that takes a small bolt used to stabilize the brake shield. The ball joint and spindle holes machined in the knuckles are the same for all years.

1973-1980 GM Dana 44 front axles use a short, adjustable drag link that couples the steering gear pitman arm to the axle steering arm bolted to the top of the left knuckle. A long, adjustable tie rod attaches to the integral knuckle steering arms. Early production trucks up to mid 1976 use a tie rod located above the knuckle steering arms. Subsequent models have the tie rod located below the knuckle steering arms.
