Except for Dana axles with vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD), Inner Axle Seals are located at the inboard ends of the axle tubes right next to the differential. For most Dana CAD axles, the seal for the CAD side is positioned in the axle tube to the outboard side of the CAD housing while the non-CAD side is next to the differential. To remove these seals, you have to disassemble the axle up to and including the differential, then the seals must be driven inward. While makeshift tools like a piece of pipe may work to drive the seals out, removal is best accomplished with our special tools that are specifically made to efficiently knock tight-fitting seals out of the seal bores. For applications like Ford Super Duty and Excursion, are removers are made to get the seals out without damaging axle shaft guides. After removing the seals, you need to clean any dirt, grit or crud out of the diff housing and axle tubes much the same as you would clean a rifle barrel. By getting the crud out of the tubes, you minimize the chances that your axle shafts will push crud into you new seals or into the differential housing.
