Drum brakes were used by Ford on the Dana 44 up to 1975. 1976 to 1979 4x4s all have front disc brakes. The wheel hubs are not interchangeable between disc and drum brakes. Most 1966-1973 era Ford 4x4s were delivered with lockout hubs as are all the 1974-1979 vehicles with part time transfer cases. Solid, splined hub gears were used on bone stock 1966-1973 models and all 1974-1979 units with the NP203 full time transfer case. Over the years, just about all the splined hub drive gears have been replaced with lockout hubs.
