There have been a several significant differential component changes to the 8.5"/8.6" family of axles over it's long production life. Up until 1989, the diff side gears and axle shafts all had 28 splines. Starting in 1989, The 28 spline configuration was phased out for many applications by a 30 spline setup using the same small hub type differential case. After 1988, you need to ID your diff parts before ordering. Both 28 and 30 spline axles were made until 2000, plus there are both large hub and small hub types and other changes specific to particular years or models.
