Most 1969-1972 Chevy and GMC open knuckle Dana 44 Front Axles were factory equipped with conventional open differentials. Depending upon the year, optional Powr-Lok® or Trac-Lok® Differential were also available. With the open differentials, internal wear is not a huge problem, but wear on the thrust washers and cross shaft can be expected on higher mileage vehicles. The differential small parts are the same for all ratios, but the ring gear flange on the case castings are different for 3.73 and numerically lower ratios and axles having 4.09 and numerically higher ratios due to the pinion gear diameter size for high and low ratios.
