Most 1960-1969 Chevy and GMC closed knuckle Dana 44 and Dana 44HD Front Axles were factory equipped with conventional open differentials. An optional Powr-Lok® clutch type limited slip differential was also available. With the open differentials, internal wear is not a huge problem, but wear on the thrust washers and cross shaft can be expected on higher mileage vehicles. The differential small parts are the same for all ratios, but the ring gear flange on the case castings are different for 3.73 and numerically lower ratios and axles having 4.09 and numerically higher ratios due to the pinion gear diameter size for high and low ratios.
