The now obsolescent Saginaw Double Cardan CV Joint used by Dodge for 1975.5 to 1993 full size 4x4 trucks was quite durable as long as the CV Centering Ball was greased every now and again. Strength wise, it is comparable to the more modern Spicer type 1330 series CV shafts used on 1994 and later Dodge Ram trucks. The simple Saginaw centering ball and socket is easier to grease, longer lasting and cheaper to repair than Spicer CV Ball that uses needle bearings especially under poor maintenance conditions. However the Spicer type CV can run at a greater angle.
The QU40817 replaceable hardened steel centering ball MUST be replaced if it shows any evidence of wear. Ideally, an expensive, specialized puller is used for removal, however you can remove the ball by carefully slitting it with a die grinder.
