Typically, the aluminum main case castings on NP241DHD transfer cases will last the life of the vehicle even though they do not appear to be near as rugged as the NP205 cast iron cases used on 1993 and older 4x4s. However, there are a number of situations that can wreck one or both case halves. Since Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 4x4s have coil spring front suspension with light gauge trailing arms, any accident involving a front end impact is likely to push the front axle and driveshaft backwards which can break one or both case castings. Other common killers are loose chains wearing through the case, whacking the case on a rock when off-roading, and operating the unit with low oil.
