The New Venture NV4500 uses three heavy-duty, cast iron thrust washers with ground flat thrust faces to control gear thrust for the manishaft 3rd and reverse gears and the countershaft 5th gear. There are also two plastic thrust washers for the reverse idler gear. In addition to the stock thrust washers, many replacement mainshafts for Dodge NV4500HD transmissions utilize a three-piece thrust washer set and near full-length splines for the 5th gear to slow down the mainshaft nut being backed off by the loose fitting 5th gear. These aftermarket thrust washers will have two half moon pieces that fit into a groove in the mainshaft plus a round retaining ring.
