Your front driveshaft slip joint is protected by a flexible rubber boot which keeps crud out and grease in. The boot should be immediately replaced if torn or damaged. To obtain maximum slip joint life, you need to take the slip joint apart to clean and re-grease the splines every few years or after extended immersion under water. You will need new boot clamps to reseal the boot during reassembly.
