Your New Process/New Venture NV273D can be electrically shifted for Mode (4x2, Neutral, 4x4) and Range (1:1 Direct Drive High Range and 2.72:1 Low Range). Since the 2003 and newer Dodge Ram 4x4s that use NV273D Transfer Cases do not have front axle lockout hubs, the range shift mechanism does not require a synchronizer ring to allow on the go shift capability. Overall, the NV273D electric shift system is far more reliable than 1980s and 1990s era electric shift transfer cases, but shift malfunctions are not uncommon and the labor time it takes to troubleshoot the problem often exceeds the cost of the defective part itself which can be with any of the shift control parts from the dash switch to the motor.
