Ford used two versions of standard Dana 70 and and one version Dana 70HD axles in 1980-1985 era 1 ton trucks and heavy-duty van/motor home chassis models. Between standard Dana 70 and Dana 70HD models, the difference is the size of the differential bearings and/or inner pinion bearings. Standard Dana 70 axles have 3-13/16" diameter diff bearing cups. Dana 70HD axles have 4-1/8" diameter diff bearing cups. For 1980-1981, Ford used Dana 70B standard axles or Dana 70HD heavy-duty axles both of which have the same 4-1/8" diameter inner pinion bearing cups. Ford phased out the Dana 70B axles in 1982-1983, replacing it with Dana 70U axles which have inner pinion bearing cups that are 3-1/2" in diameter. Before ordering bearings you need to determine if your Ford has a Dana 70 or Dana 70HD rear axle, plus if your vehicle is a 1982 or 1983 with a standard Dana 70, you also need to know if it is a Dana 70B or Dana 70U.
