Over the years, Dana has primarily used Timken bearings when building their axles. For long life and dimensional consistency, Timken bearings are unmatched by any other brand of bearing I have used rebuilding axles over the past 30+ years in the business. When you are a shade tree mechanic dealing with a diff and pinion rebearing job without all the fancy gauging tools we have, you always want your new bearings to be the same overall thickness as the original bearings were when the axle was built so your pinion depth, pinion preload and backlash are within the tolerance limits when you are done with the job.
