The Ford special Saginaw (also called AAM) CV is very similar in design to the smaller 3R series greaseable Saginaw Double Cardan Constant Velocity Joint used in numerous General Motors vehicles since the 1970's. However, the non-greaseable version used by Ford in some early Excursions trucks is both larger and stronger than the the GM 3R CV. The special Ford Saginaw CV joint features u-joints with 1-3/16" diameter cups and 3-1/2" center to center span between the universal joints. The Flange Yoke is easy to rebuild using QU40741 or QU40752 Parts Kit and if needed, QU50038 Yoke Liner. These Saginaw type of shafts were only used in early production vehicles, but since used ones often end up in newer trucks, we are listing them for all years of this generation of Ford 4x4s.
Dan the Gear Man® Tech Tip: The QU40817 replaceable hardened steel centering ball MUST be replaced if it shows any evidence of wear. Ideally, an expensive, specialized puller is used for removal, however, you can remove the ball by carefully slitting it with a die grinder.
