Chains & Sprockets 2003-2012 Ram 273D

Dodge does not offer a lockout hub option on 2003 and newer Dodge Ram 2500, Ram 3500, Ram 4500, and Ram 5500 4x4 trucks, so even in 4x2 mode, the front axle shafts, differential, front driveshaft, transfer case front output shaft and the transfer case chain/sprockets are always rotating when you drive even though they are not under power. Besides sucking a bit of power and fuel, all these rotating components are subject to wear. You should replace the chain when doing major transfer case service, plus you should inspect the sprockets for wear on the teeth. If you can feel teeth wear with your fingernail REPLACE BOTH the SPROCKETS and CHAIN!
