Bearings & Bushings 2003-2012 Ram NV271D

All Dodge New Process/New Venture NV271D manual shift transfer cases use the same bearings except for the input and output needle bearings used on fixed rear output applications. Wear and failure issues with the Ball Bearings are usually related to hard use or more likely from lubrication problems (old, dirty, low, or wrong oil). I have seen a surprising amount of needle bearing issues, especially with the front output, rear bearing. Lubrication problems are certainly part of it, but I suspect the constant rotation of the Dodge Ram front output shaft in both 4x2 and 4x4 modes is the primary cause as Ford 4x4s with lockout hubs and NV271F transfer cases don't seem to have near the wear issues on the front output shaft and needle bearing.

The vast majority of Dodge New Process/New Venture NV271D Transfer Cases have a Slip Joint type rear output shaft in which a female spline driveshaft slip yoke fits over the male spline transfer case rear output shaft. The slip yoke is supported inside the transfer case extension housing by QU50261 Bushing. The Bushing should be replaced when you perform major service on the transfer case or when you experience repeated rear output seal failures.
