The 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt Beam Type open knuckle front axle uses replaceable Ball Joints pressed into the steering knuckle. Both Ball Joints are weight bearing. A threaded adjuster that screws into the upper hole of the axle yoke is used to provide preload on the Ball Joints. Dana, who supplied these parts to GM, has modified the seal configuration on the current production parts, but the high quality and basic Ball Joint design has remained unchanged since the early 1970's. Over the years we have found the average Ball Joint life of our non-greaseable, factory Ball Joints to be 7 to 10 years for vehicles used as daily drivers and/or work vehicles.
