GM used the same left and right axle shafts for all 1973-1980 4x4s with Dana 44 front axles. Effective with the 1973 model year, the axle u-joint was beefed up to the Spicer 1350WJ size, a huge improvement over the dinky 1310WJ axle u-joint used on the 1969-1972 Dana 44 open knuckle axle.

We offer two different Universal Joints for your hard working 1973 to 1980 Chevy or GMC 4x4 SUV or Truck with a Dana 44 solid front axle. All are good, reliable products, but different manufacturing techniques and seal types will have a major influence on the ultimate life of the joint. Our most popular choice is our TK40712 cold-forged, non-greaseable, original equipment replacement U-Joint. The wear-resistant cold-forged cross and superior sealing make it the best choice for both low maintenance and long life. QU90007 is hot-forged and equipped with single lip seals. They are greaseable through a flush fitting threaded into one of the caps. With good maintenance and quality lubricant like our Pyroplex® Plus Grease, these joints will last and last.
