The American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) 1150 11.5" Ring Gear 14 Bolt Rear Axle with leaf spring suspension was introduced for the 2003 model year on heavy-duty Diesel Dodge Ram 2500 and Dodge Ram 3500 trucks and high Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) gas engine models. The AAM 1150 replaced the Dana-Spicer Model 80 Rear Axle which Dodge used from 1994-2002. The AAM 1150 axle has oil bath type wheel seals which, when properly installed, are more effective than the grease type seals used in the earlier Dana axles. Gearset backlash and differential bearing adjustment are done using threaded adjusters. Starting in the 2013 model year, the AAM 1150 axle was replaced by the new AAM 1180 axle on Ram 3500 Dual Rear Wheel (DRW) trucks with Cummins Diesel engines, Aisin automatic transmissions, and either 3.73 or 4.10 axle ratios. For the 2017 model year, Ram also lists the AAM 1180 axle as being optional with DG7 (68RFE) automatics.
