The American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) 1150 11.5" Ring Gear 14 Bolt Rear Axle with leaf spring suspension was introduced for the 2003 model year on heavy-duty Diesel Dodge Ram 2500 and Dodge Ram 3500 trucks and high Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) gas engine models. The AAM 1150 replaced the Dana-Spicer Model 80 Rear Axle which Dodge used from 1994-2002. The AAM 1150 axle has oil bath type wheel seals which, when properly installed, are more effective than the grease type seals used in the earlier Dana axles. Gearset backlash and differential bearing adjustment are done using threaded adjusters. Effective with the 2014 model year, the leaf spring 11.5" AAM 1150 axle was replaced by a coil spring AAM 1150 axle for the Ram 2500, but the leaf spring version was retained for the Ram 3500.
