1999-2002 Ford Super Duty Dana 50 Front Axle

When the 1999 Ford F-250 and Single Rear Wheel (SRW) F-350 Super Duty® trucks were first introduced, they used a new design Dana-Spicer Model 50 monobeam front axle with unitized front wheel hubs. Externally, the Model 50 Axle looks almost exactly like the Dana 60 used in the same era Super Duty Dual Rear Wheel (DRW) trucks, however, all the Dana 50 internal differential components are substantially smaller. With the advent of a SRW Dana 60 for the 2002 model year, the Dana 50 was phased out and replaced by the Dana 60 in all F-250 and F350 4x4s by the end of year. The Ford and Dana Parts Books only list the Dana 50 for Super Duty models up to 2002. As far as I have been able to verify, the only vehicle that used a Dana 50 after 2002 was the Excursion, but, there may have been some 2003 and 2004 gas V8 trucks with a Dana 50 for speciality or export markets.

Most of the Model 50 axle components for the F-250 and F-350 remained unchanged throughout the four year product cycle (1999-2002), but there are some year and model differences including outer axle shafts, knuckle seals, and wheel hubs. Compared to the preceding F-250 and F-350 4x4s, your 1999 to 2004 era Super Duty® 4x4 front axles has a number of design differences that require unique tools and repair procedures especially in regards to the outer axle shaft and wheel hub. Servicing these axles is not hard, IF you know what to expect and have access to accurate service information at least a couple of special tools.
