The ZF S5-47 is a fully synchronized 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive first used by Ford for a 1994.5 model year F-Series trucks with 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel engines. The rest of the F-Series models and the full-size Bronco would get ZF S5-42 5 speeds for the 1988 model year. The ZF S5-47 is very similar to and shares a number of parts with the earlier ZF S5-42 5-speed, but the input torque rating was upped from 420 lb. ft. to 470 lb. ft. The S5-47 2-piece transmission housing is made of cast aluminum. The Front Case includes an integral Bellhousing, and it is provided with both left and right PTO covers. Ford used both medium ratio (5.08:1 1st gear, Diesel only) and wide ratio (5.72:1 1st gear, gas engine only) versions of this transmission for both 4x4 and 4x2 applications.

The ZFS5-47 transmission is primarily found in F250, F350, and Super Duty trucks. This is a German-designed 5-speed transmission that was reasonably durable for the stock gas and diesel engines it was mated to. In many respects, the ZF S5-47 is superior to the New Venture NV4500 series transmissions used in contemporary Dodge and GM trucks, but the Dexron/Mercon transmission fluid required in the ZF has certainly contributed to many transmission failures if the transmission fluid was not changed regularly. (Note on Fluid: Regular Dexron II/Mercon XT-2 was used with Gas engine applications, Synthetic Mercon or Castrol Transmax-S/Transnd was used with Diesel models.)

1997 model year F250/F350 production continued into early 1998, but except for some F450 Super Duty trucks, there is no US market 1998 model year F250 or F350 trucks. When the 1999 Super Duty models were released, ZF S5-47 was not in the line-up as it was replaced by the ZF S5-47M.

ZF S5-47 transmissions are NOT interchangeable with 1987-1995 S5-42 or 1999-2002 S5-47M transmissions.
