Jeep designated the full-size Wagoneer, Cherokee, Cherokee Chief, Grand Wagoneer and pickups as J-Series vehicles. All 1974-1991 Jeep J-Series models have Dana 44 open knuckle front axles. The Wagoneer/Cherokee and 1/2 ton J-10 models have 6 bolt front wheel hubs. The 3/4 ton J-20 truck has 8 bolt front hubs. Drum brakes were standard and disc brakes optional for 1974-1976, but all 1977 to 1991 Jeeps will have front disc brakes. Except for a vacuum disconnect axle offered for the 1982-1984 model years, the front axle design was largely unchanged through the entire production period although spindles, axle shafts, inner axle seals, pinion yokes and hub parts will vary by year and model.
