Ford used left drop New Process NP205F remote mount transfer cases for F-250 4x4s from 1973-1977-1/2 High Boy F250 4x4s. Ford also used direct mount (married) NP205 models in 1973-1979 F100/F150, 1977.5-1979 F250, 1979 F350, and 1978-1979 Bronco. During the same years, Ford also used the NP203 full time case (1974-1979), Dana 20 (1973-1978 Bronco), and Dana 21 (early 4 speed F100).
The remote mount NP205F is a cast iron, gear drive transfer case with a 1:1 high range and a 1.96:1 low range. It is the only left drop remote NP205 ever made by New Process. Although it does share many common parts with other NP205 models, the remote Ford case does have a unique main case.
The horizontal, top mounting configuration was carried over from the earlier Dana 24 transfer case. The original rubber mount isolators degrade over time which can lead to excessive transfer case movement that in extreme cases will actually shift the transfer case out of the selected range. Installing a new urethane mount kit will rectify the movement problem. An unhappy consequence of ignoring the worn mount issue is excessive wear on the sliding clutch and gear teeth which can still cause the transfer case to "jump" out of gear if not corrected.
