Jeep used an open-knuckle Dana 30 front axle with 6-bolt spindles on 1977-1978.5 CJ models with Disc Brakes. Small 1310 sized axle u-joints with 1-1/16" diameter cups are used to couple the 27 spline inner axle shafts to the 27 spline outer shafts. The front axle mounts over the springs, and a single hydraulic shock absorber is used on each side. Available factory axle ratios were 3.54 and 4.10. The differential is a 2-pinion open type.
The Jeep CJ was the last production American 4x4 to get disc brakes which were first introduced as an option on CJ models for the 1977 model year. The new front disc brake setup provided a huge improvement in stopping power over the standard 11" x 2" drum brakes.
Bendix supplied the disc brake components for 1977-1978.5 Jeep CJ-5 and CJ-7 4x4s which are similar in design to Bendix disc brakes used on International Scouts and Ford F250 4x4s. The Brake Rotor is 11-3/4" in diameter and 1-1/8" wide. The rear axle was furnished with 11" x 2" drum brakes.
Two serviceable, opposed, and adjustable Timken taper wheel bearings were used in each wheel hub along with a simple inner wheel grease seal. The bearings are lubricated with grease packed into the bearings at the time of assembly. On the outboard end of the hub, a non-reusable 6 bolt gasket is used to seal the drive flange or hub-lock. Wheel bearing retention and adjustment is handled by a 4-piece spindle nut set that includes an inner thrust washer, inner hex spindle nut, bend-over type lockwasher and outer hex spindle nut.
Jeep would only use Bendix front disc brakes on CJ models for 1-1/2 years. Midway through the 1978 model year, Jeep started using a different disc brake system that had a 7/8" wide brake rotor and a caliper anchor plate retained by 2 bolts. The brake parts for the 2 types are not interchangeable.
