Description

Jeep has used Dana Spicer axles since 1941. We do not know when Dana started stamping identification numbers on the axle tubes, but most axles built since the mid 1950's will have a axle code stamped on one of the axle tubes. The original axle codes would typically include the Spicer axle assembly number and a date code, but these numbers are of little use in determining the exact components the axle was built with unless you have access to both factory parts books and Spicer assembly number cross references. In the mid to late 1960's Spicer started assigning a 6+1 digit Bill of Material (BOM) number to each specific axle build. Spicer also started affixing stamped metal BOM tags to the differential covers of many axles. The BOM number tells us the exact Spicer-supplied build components used in that axle. Today, the BOM number has grown to 7 + 1 or 2) digits and it is increasingly found on a decal.

For more information on Jeep BOM numbers see the photographs displayed with this Help Note.
