Description
QU51010 Heavy Duty Ball Pilot Bearing for Dodge V10 and 1989-2005.5 Cummins Diesel Engines features thicker bearing races than regular bearings of it's size. Pre-lubricated and fully sealed for long life. We strongly recommend this bearing as the minimum upgrade for all diesel and V10 applications, particularly if your engine has increased horsepower. Your flywheel will need to be bored by a machine shop to accept this fine bearing. Imported.

Tech Note 1: Included Instructions
Installation instructions giving the desired bearing fit are included with QU51010 Bearing. Due to variances in the accuracy of some machinist measuring tools, we do not give a "Bore To" Dimension, instead we provide the amount of compression needed for an interference fit so you MUST take the Bearing to the machine shop with the flywheel & instruction sheet so the machine shop can get the proper bore! A copy of the Instruction Sheet is at the bottom of this page.
Tech Note 2: Bronze Pilot Bushings
1989-1993 Dodge Cummins Diesel trucks used a bronze Pilot Bushing. These Pilot Bushings quickly get worn oversize so they do not keep the transmission input shaft centered in the flywheel. These worn out Bushings are a contributing cause to the short life and extremely high failure rate of the Getrag G360 5 speed transmission.
Tech Note 3: Failed Factory Pilot Bearings
V10 and 1994-up Cummins Diesel engines had a needle roller Pilot Bearing from the factory. Due to the simple seals used on these Bearings, they tend to lose their grease and fail from lack of lubrication at under 100,000 miles. Once the grease is gone, the Bearing quickly falls apart. Besides chewing up the tip of the transmission input shaft, a failed pilot bearing can cause misalignment of the transmission gears. Most cases of transmission input shaft tooth gear failure are due to a failed Pilot Bearing.
Tech Note 4: Drawback
About the only drawback to using a Ball Pilot Bearing that I know of is the possibility the inner race of the Bearing may wear into the input shaft tip over time. While the wear is usually relatively minor it can occur especially when the transmission bearings are worn and the input shaft end-play is way over spec.
Tech Note 5: DMF Note
I do not recommend installing the QU51010 Bearing in the throw away Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) used with 2005.5 and newer Rams with G56 transmissions. If you need a clutch, you also probably need a new flywheel due to wear on the friction plates inside the flywheel. Very few used DMFs I have checked will pass a break-away torque test. The design seems to be engineered to only last the life of one clutch.
Tech Note 6: Thicker Races
Almost all full size Dodge light trucks have input shafts with a 3/4" tip. QU51010 has thicker races compared to standard 3/4" ID Ball Bearings. Compare the QU51010 bearing on the left to the standard 3/4" bore bearing on the right. The extra thickness of the inner race is critical in preventing the bearing from breaking apart when your transmission bearings are worn. A transmission with excessive input shaft end-play puts tremendous loads on the pilot bearing which now must support some the transmission gear train AND center the input shaft with the crankshaft center line.
