Tech Note 1: Current Seals
The 1989 model year was the first year Dodge installed the Cummins 6BT Diesel engine in Ram trucks. The original crank seal had a steel outer shell which was pressed into the aluminum seal adapter. Over time, the steel shell would become compressed by the seal adapter due to the different expansion/contraction rates of the two parts. In many cases, the seal shell would get compressed to the point oil would seep between the shell and adapter. Most of the seals I replaced on 1989-1994 engines were so loose, I easily pulled them out with a dental pick. Our current production seals have a ribbed, rubber outside diameter seal so they are not affected by contraction of the aluminum seal shell.
Tech Note 2: Tool Set
I recommend you use our TS6000 Cummins rear crank seal tool set to install your new seal or seal with wear sleeve. With the TS6000 tools there is absolutely no need to remove the flywheel housing and rear seal adapter. However if for any reason, you do need to remove the rear seal adapter from the back of the block, we do include a Cummins supplied stamped steel centering ring with QU10556 Seal to center the rear seal adapter. The centering ring is required to center the seal adapter because Cummins did not dowel the seal retainer to the block so it can be installed off center unless you use the line up ring. For service procedures, see TSB6000.
Tech Note 3: Seals
Our Aluminum Crank Seal Installer will install both QU10556 replacement seals and QU11101 seals with wear sleeves to the correct depth on Cummins Dodge 5.7L and 6.7L Diesels plus most 4BT and 6BT Diesel engines. This includes Dodge trucks and most industrial, ag, marine, and automotive engines with 4BT and 6BT diesel engines. Replaces Cummins crank seal installer tool 3824078.
Tech Note 4: Alternate Seal
QU10556 seal is available as an alternative to QU11101 replacement seal if crank is NOT grooved from the old seal or the crank seal surface nicked or damaged in some way. The seal and wear sleeve are installed together using optional TS6000 Installer Tool Set.
