Applications
Tech Note 1: Seal Starter
On QU10556, the thin plastic disposable Seal Starter is pre-installed in the Seal. The Seal Starter is flared slightly to fit over the end of the crank. Once the Seal is slid over the Starter and onto the crank, remove and discard the Seal Starter.
Tech Note 2: Included Steel Ring
The steel ring included with QU10556 is not a seal installer. It is only used if to center the seal adapter to the crank for some reason you removed the aluminum rear seal adapter housing from the back of the Cummins block (removing the adapter is not necessary to replace the seal). The rear seal adapter does not have dowel pins to center it to the crankshaft, so you use the steel ring to keep the adapter centered on the crank as you tighten the adapter bolts. The Seal Retainer is gasketed to both the back of the block and the top of the oil pan, so unless you REALLY have to remove adapter, DON'T!
Tech Note 3: Original Crank Seal
The 1989 model year was the first year Dodge installed the Cummins 6BT Diesel engine in Ram trucks. The original crank seal had a steel outer shell which was pressed into the aluminum seal adapter. Over time, the steel shell would become compressed by the seal adapter due to the different expansion/contraction rates of the two parts. In many cases, the seal shell would get compressed to the point oil would seep between the shell and adapter. Most of the seals I replaced on 1989-1994 engines were so loose, I easily pulled them out with a dental pick. Our current production seals have a ribbed, rubber outside diameter seal so they are not affected by contraction of the aluminum seal shell.
Tech Note 4: Tool Set and TSB
I recommend you use our TS6000 Cummins rear crank seal tool set to install your new seal or seal with wear sleeve. With the TS6000 tools there is absolutely no need to remove the flywheel housing and rear seal adapter. However if for any reason, you do need to remove the rear seal adapter from the back of the block, we do include a Cummins supplied stamped steel centering ring with QU10556 Seal to center the rear seal adapter. The centering ring is required to center the seal adapter because Cummins did not dowel the seal retainer to the block so it can be installed off center unless you use the line up ring. For service procedures, see TSB6000.
Tech Note 5: Crank Seal Installer
Our Aluminum Crank Seal Installer will install both QU10556 replacement seals and QU11101 seals with wear sleeves to the correct depth on Cummins Dodge 5.7L and 6.7L Diesels plus most 4BT and 6BT Diesel engines. This includes Dodge trucks and most industrial, ag, marine, and automotive engines with 4BT and 6BT diesel engines. Replaces Cummins crank seal installer tool 3824078.
Tech Note 6: Alternate Seal
QU11101 seal with wear sleeve is available as an alternative to QU10556 replacement seal if crank is grooved from the old seal or the crank seal surface is nicked or damaged in some way. The seal and wear sleeve are installed together using optional TS6000 Installer.

Tech Note 8: 2019 and Newer 6.7L Ram Trucks
Effective with the 2019 model year, Ram trucks with the 6.7L Cummins engine have crankshafts with a 10 hole flywheel bolt pattern instead of the 8 bolt pattern used for 2018 and prior years. The bolt circle and bolt thread is the same same so our QT3000 Installer and QU10556 Seal will still work on 2019 and newer engines, however Cummins also increased the seal installation depth and used a narrower seal so we are recommending you use our new QT6050 Installer and TK11895 Seal for 2019 and newer engines. QT6050 Installer and TK11895 seal are included in QK6020 Kit. TS6020 Tool Set includes QT6050 Installer.
