2019-Current Ram 4500, 5500 AAM 12.0 12" Rear Axles
2019-current RAM 4500 and RAM 5500 trucks use American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) 12" banjo type rear axles. These axles, which were all new for the 2019 model year, feature a steel housing and a front-mounted, removable 1-piece carrier housing. The 12" (305 mm) AAM axle replaces the Dana S-111 axle used on these commercial chassis-cab RAM trucks from 2008-2018.
The removable 1-piece carrier assembly contains the ring and pinion along with the differential assembly. Although the design makes in-vehicle inspection of the differential components nearly impossible, it does make differential and gear service easier.
The spindle thread diameter did not change from the size used with S-111 axles, however, a change in spindle nut design necessitated a change to a finer thread pitch to obtain accurate wheel bearing adjustment. A reusable, right-hand thread single spindle nut is used for rear wheel bearing adjustment and retention. The nut is locked in place on the spindle by a square steel key. A snap ring type retainer prevents the key from slipping out of place.
An o-ring is used to seal between the full-float type axle shaft and wheel hub. The axle shaft is retained by eight TK11840 metric bolts with factory applied threadlocker.
The wheel bearings must be packed with grease to provide initial lubrication. In service, 75w85 Synthetic Differential Oil that travels into the wheel hub from the differential will provide long-term wheel bearing lubrication.
The brake rotor is a separate part that bolts to the back side of the hub with 8 bolts. The Tone Ring for the Anti-Lock Brake System attaches to the brake rotor with 5 small screws.
