2003-2012.5 Dodge/Ram New Venture NV271D Transfer Cases
New Venture NV271D Manual Shift Transfer Cases were used in 2003-2012.5 Ram 2500/Ram 3500 and 2008-2012.5 Ram 4500/Ram 5500 4x4 trucks. The NV271D was the base transfer case for most trim levels with the NV273D Electric Shift unit available as an extra cost option.
The NV271D is a direct mount, chain drive, two speed transfer case that bolts directly to the rear of your Ram truck transmission. It has an aluminum case and the planetary type low range features a 2.72:1 gear reduction. An oil pump is driven from the rear output shaft to provide pressurized lubrication to the input shaft and mainshaft components. A slip yoke type rear output shaft is used for all applications EXCEPT most 2007-2012 chassis cab models.
Input shafts with 23 splines were used for gas engine and many Diesel trucks equipped with Chrysler automatic transmissions. 29 spline input shafts were used for all manual transmission and automatic transmission Diesel heavy-duty models. All pickups and chassis cab models with slip yoke type rear outputs use a single-row mainshaft to input shaft pilot bearing. Chassis cab models with fixed flange rear outputs have double-row mainshaft to input shaft pilot bearings. In addition, two different indicator switch types were used with the shift cam being different for the two types.

The NV271D is usually a durable and reliable transfer case with sufficient torque capability for stock engines and those with mild torque upgrades. At the time of it's release, New Venture rated the NV271D for over 2,000 pounds of torque at the OUTPUT shaft. The Input torque was not publicly released, but it was undoubtedly more than adequate for the Cummins Diesel engines of the 2003-2012 era.
Ram replaced the NV271D with the Borg Warner 44-47 manual shift transfer case during the 2012 model year. It is debatable which is the stronger unit, however, parts availability is better, and parts cost is generally lower for the New Venture made transfer cases.
